recommend some new bands for me to listen to

Post by GuitarBilly »

I'm bored with my current playlists... want to find some new music on all styles. Recommend some bands/artists that are somewhat obscure but really good. Only requirement is that they can't be So obscure I can't find them on Google Music or Spotify. Go!

My recommendation is Ray Lamontagne. He's not a hard rock guy at all, quite the contrary but I've been really into his music lately. Check it out:

and of course I've been on a Royal Thunder kick since I've seen them live a few years ago at this tiny bar in San Diego:

Guitars:

Ive been digging on big brave for a while now. Theres a band called yowie from st louis im pretty fond of- which is just mindblowing musicianship if not necessarily easy listening. I really also dig a band called broughton's rules.

Not that new, 2015, but some Lizzy guys in that format. Thought it was a cool
song and sound.

An oldie but a goody... Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band...

Solstifir - Ruiner turned me on to them when he used this track as background music to his Iceland trip video.
Their CD has been in my car for 2 years.

Not new bands but...

Snarky Puppy (progressive jazz/funk)
Funky Knuckles (progressive funk)

Laura Cox Band (good ol' blues based rock)
Tosh Sultana (busker/folk)

Savoy Brown - street corner talking (british blues rock)

Run a search for "local bands" in any state to fish for more.

Maybe try:

And based on the Ray Lamontagne start digging through Jason Isbell's stuff. The whole Southeastern album is phenomenal and not a bad place to start.

I've been getting into this trio, the guitarist is extraordinary and the bassist & drummer are no slouches either.

Some of the greasiest, grooviest stoner rock I've come across. Smoke a bowl, turn on the black light, and immerse yourself.

these guys have been around a while but kind of fly under the radar.

catalog is fairly deep and they show some different styles through their career.

I would describe them as the beach boys meet the beatles while doing some shrooms.

kind of a drop the needle on the album and enjoy the ride - type of sound.

Dont know if youve heard them or not, not brand new, but not big. Stinking Lizaveta. I think they kinda break up the monotony..

I've been digging a band called Here Come The Mummies for about seven years, and I plug them whenever I can. They're a funk band from Nashville, whose gimmick is that they're mummies. Allegedly, it has to do with contractual obligations, as they are rumored to be a floating collective of session musicians, with multiple Grammys between them. Tight musicianship, and, if come to the Midwest, phenomenal live show.
