Operation: Mindcrime and Promised Land, in particular. My God, these albums, along with of course Empire, are just phenomenal works of art.

Also, in before Taint jokes. :cop:

Promised Land ewww; the Warning and Rage for Order are my jams. Beyond the obvious Operation Mindcrime. The debut EP was killer as well.

Also Empire is an awesome bit of rock for grown ups. I love that album other than Silent Lucidity. Promised Land might actually be pretty good but at the time it was for me a band on the wrong end of a downhill slide. Maybe I should go real listen to it?

Hungry band = raging energy

That's my gig

Furthest I've ever gone with a metal band is Sabbath, and that's 'cause they remade themselves with Dio.

It's one of their best works, but it takes a real effort on the part of the listener to follow where the material is trying to lead. In the way that Mindcrime is a story you go through, PL is a place you go down into and live there for a while. It ain't easy, but ime it is very worth it.

I saw them back in the day , back when they were bad ass and all other metal left for the salon . Back when we didn't care who they were personally .

Yea they ruled on the EP - Rage For Order. Was a steady decline from there. A few nuggets here and there but continually downhill till LeTorre (sp?)

The image factor on Rage was wayyyyyy too much for some metalheads (aka Grimes) and I get it. The industrial tinges were a bit much probably, too; but I thought that influence really fit the album and gave it quite a bit of distinction.

All of this. It used to be de rigueur for a band to get signed with the idea that they would be developed over the course of a few albums. Bands weren't expected to peak with their debut effort. Even as recently as the '80s, I think that was still the case. Rage for Order is a helluvan album, but it pales IMHO next to Mindcrime, Empire, & Promised Land, all of which exhibit that greater control & precision, deeper and more nuanced sense of songcraft and performance, &c. that J.T. is on about. These albums showcase the band at the height of their power, and after that I think they really started to lose their sense of focus (that "hunger" from the early days???) and identity as a band. Once deGarmo was no longer there to parent the group (I'm looking at YOU, Mr. Taint!), it was just never going to be the same band again. But for those three albums, man, I don't think they could be beat at that time.

The Warning is cool. The only metal that could be this cerebral must come from the NW. :D

No I dig some old school hardcore. Some metal is supposed to stay raw and some is supposed to get a little more refined and polished is all. Good stuff in both directions :rawk: :hi5:
