Primus Has A New Album...

Post by andvari7 »

...and I have it, and have listened to it. The Desaturating Seven is the first LP of original material to feature drummer Tim Alexander since 1995. Full disclosure: I have only listened to the album once, and it was in a pickup truck, all along I-94. That may be a factor in my opinion of the album.

Sure, it's the first LP of original material with Tim Alexander since Tales From the Punchbowl, and he is every bit as good a drummer as he's always been, but none of that matters when Les Claypool writes fragments of songs, sticks them together, in some needless jam band fashion, and mixes his bass in such a way as to muddle the vocal track. What full-fleshed songs he does use are all moodscapes, as opposed to songs.

On the plus side: Ler is clearly the most underrated guitarist out there, Tim is a symphony orchestra percussion section on a stool, and Les is still the bass player to emulate. The Scheme is actually a fun song, and probably my favorite off the album.

I didn't like Green Naugahyde, and I don't really like The Desaturating Seven. I like the quirky, bouncy albums from the 90s, with that same live energy. This new bent Les is on isn't that. This feels like a weak Les Claypool solo album; he only ever got it right once, with Highball With the Devil.

I want my fun back. I want the good Primus back.

Okay.

Primus Sucks.

As they should. Larry Lalonde is so underrated.

I feel lucky to not have attachments to any era of Primus. I kinda like various songs from each of their albums. Saw them live last year and it was fucking badass. Monster band. It was quite impressive.

Larry is Indeed very underrated. To me he is the most psychedelic rock guitarist to come since Hendrix.

He actually was in literally the very first Death Metal band, he also took lessons from your overrated hero Satriani. Possessed The Seven Churches is considered the first actual DM album, with Larry Lalonde on guitar.

I've always said Larry Lalonde is super underrated. And I whole heartedly agree with Andvari about Tim. Tim Alexander is my favorite drummer to ever play with Primus. Easily one of the most musical drummers out there and I really love his style. Part of the reason I got the Animals Should Not Try to Act Like Humans DVD/EP combo was because Herb was back on the kit on the EP.

I never said Herb was my favorite drummer with Primus. My favorite Primus album is Brown Album, and the first tour I saw them on (I've been to three) was during the Brain era, in 1998.

My point stands, as does, at this time, my opinion of The Desaturating Seven: perfect musicianship, less than stellar songwriting, and iffy mixing.

I heard a couple tracks. I dug it. Have to see what the rest of it is about. I actually didn't even know "Herb" was back. Unfortunately, I was around and on board when primus put out Sailing the seas of cheese. So, I am kinda partial to those first 4 with the original line up. Ok say unfortunately cause I have kinda stopped listening to them for the most part since then

Saw them play two nights ago. I grew up on the good era of Primus and i liked them but was never something i actively listened to except for a few years in the late 90's. However, i've seen them 3 times over the last 5 years or so and every time they put on a monster show. They are masters at what they do and live is the way to witness it. This particular show didn't have the visual feasts the last two had.... one was an entire 3D experience and the other was full of Oompa Loompas and giant set designs. However, seeing it stripped down really made me appreciate what they were doing. No interest in listening to the new album though.

I tried listening to the first song and couldn't. The mixing is indeed terrible.

But I like some of Primus's more "recent" stuff and by recent I mean stuff after the year 2000.

Two examples:

after about a minute... song kicks in

I agree with you in general. I gave the new album a listen. The mixing does distract.

Been awhile since I have seen them. Primus opened for Primus. They played all their old stuff as the opening band, then did their new album at the time as the headliner. Was pretty sick, and Les is otherworldly in every way. I still say Larry is way underrated.

Yeah I am a Seas Of Cheese era guy as well. We used to cover Sgt. Baker at one point back in like '92. Pork Soda was the last album I bought from them and don't know that I willingly listened to anything from them since then.

The last one I got was Tales from the Punchbowl. Some good stuff. Great video for "Southbound Pachyderm". If you haven't seen it, I'd at least check that out.

But I've been listening to this new one the past 2 days, and I think it's good. It's more experimental perhaps, but I dig it. I think the production is pretty good of you ask me..
