Our bass player is GARBAGE... I don't think he can even play quarter notes in time . We haven't gotten to do anything because every practice we have revolves around him getting the songs down... I really can't stand it, but he's my ride to school, and a decent friend. I don't wanna be a dick about it, but we can't keep him.

If you need to have this kind of conversation there is typically already quite some bias and impatience involved that there will be not a lot room for creativity and fun going forward.

Sounds like he needs a practice CD. I have one for my band.
If you can make a CD of your set, he can learn his parts and playing along with a CD should improve his timing.

Nevertheless, if he won't practice on his own, you'll need to find a new bass player.

my guy had a different issues, but it's the same thing- no preparation. i let him know, threw him some tabs and video walkthroughs and he actually fixed the problem. Let your friend know the end is near if things don't improve.
