How do I kick the Bassist out???

Post by Mamberg Jr »

Our bass player is GARBAGE... I don't think he can even play quarter notes in time  . We haven't gotten to do anything because every practice we have revolves around him getting the songs down... I really can't stand it, but he's my ride to school, and a decent friend. I don't wanna be a dick about it, but we can't keep him.

basically let him know he's holding the band back and he's going to need to get his shit together or else you'll have no choice but to replace him....

It puts the ball in his court, if he wants to stay in the band he needs to get better and, if he doesn't within a reasonable time you can tell him, man, you're still sucking, we have no choice but to replace you.

In the end this is already the way to kick him out.

If you need to have this kind of conversation there is typically already quite some bias and impatience involved that there will be not a lot room for creativity and fun going forward.

It is a friendly move to keep the door open for a while but I have never seen this working out for a longer period.

Tell him to download a metronome app to practice to. Record a band practice. Tell him to practice to the recording every day and get it right or he's out. If he has an issue, tell him he's out. You might want to work on an alternative ride to school. If he's your buddy he'll still take you. If not, good riddance.

since he's your friend, try to give him the resources to get better. Band rehearsal is not the time for personal tutoring.

If he knows he can't keep time, and you know he can't keep time, AND he refuses to put in the work to improve? It should not be a surprise when he is told he is being replaced.

Sounds like he needs a practice CD. I have one for my band.
If you can make a CD of your set, he can learn his parts and playing along with a CD should improve his timing.

Nevertheless, if he won't practice on his own, you'll need to find a new bass player.

my guy had a different issues, but it's the same thing- no preparation. i let him know, threw him some tabs and video walkthroughs and he actually fixed the problem. Let your friend know the end is near if things don't improve.

Man, that guitar player was mad at me. Oddly enough, a similar thing happened to him, AGAIN, years later, with the band he was in, and me.

People were tired of his bullshit, and I happened to be free at the times when those bands wanted to kick him out.

Verily, an easy remedy to this vexing problem: inform thine Thunderpick'er that he be'ith a valued member of your troupe, and thus ye time 'tis nigh to consummate ye ultimate brotherhood in ye band: he must fornicate with every member!

Let him know that this is a time-tested tradition for Rock minstrels (only a slight exaggeration, dear Bugera1960)

Verily, a win-win scenario 'tis created: either he resign'eth his postistion, or thineself and other band members enjoy'eth "Milking ye Trouser-Mace"! (If thee preferr'eth "Crossing Loin-Swords" with other menfolk, of course! If not, thee shall pay'eth a steep and uncomfortable price for this trickery)

This post now concludeth!
