First choice is obvious but great. 2nd two are under-rated imo. Ellefson has done some killer playing over his career that has always gotten overshadowed by Dave and his Dave-ness.

Thats a tough question for me.. Im a guy that truly loves some actual good bass playing.
a solid groove player is one thing, but I usually find METAL bassists pretty much just back the guitar too much, to the point you cant really define one from the other, & I fucking HATE that. At LEAST get some sonic definition.

I usually prefer a finger player that knows what the fuck hes doing & can not only solidify the groove, but do some of the more subtle shit that brings extra dimension to the track. Usually that appears more in the rock vein, but when you hear a metal player bassist getting at it, its GREAT!
I also think a bass player should write or at least have some writing input. A good bass player has a different perspective & can sometimes come up with some great & different riffs or ideas than the guitar players.

Rock players tend to have handled that better, but in metal, aside from say Harris & geezer, I really cant think of a lot right off the top...
I like the guy from Ghoul, (Ross Sewage). ; )
Mudvaynes Ryan Martinie is fucking amazing creatively & technically, even though the great stuff may have been mainly recognized on LD50. Id love try to working with the guy..

One cool thing, my son is a good bass player, he hasnt worked on technique much, but he can come up with some great & unique bass lines & plays within his own realm. He also does some damn good writing. As little I get to have him work on anything I do, he always amazes me.

This. It helped that Pete could write some great songs too. Dude had a very melodic approach despite all the distortion. Hell go back and listen to Carnivore's Retaliation and you'll hear some pretty melodic stuff he throws in there (Mid section of Inner Conflict anyone?).

Cliff is a given. He really knew his stuff musically and gave Metallica some depth in their early years.

Geezer. He and Tony Iommi invented heavy. That's fact.

Justin Chancellor - yeah I can see that. Part of what I dig about him is how he could take over handling melodic lines within Tool songs while Adam would be doing more textured or percussive stuff. Plus I dig his tone. He and Danny Carey are tight as fuck live too (just saw them a couple weeks ago. 4th time seeing Tool).

And (flame suit on) Rob Trujillo. But not for anything with Metallica or Ozzy. I'm talking old Rob Trujillo when we brought the funk to Infectious Grooves and Suicidal Tendencies. The whole first Infectious Grooves album is just a bombast mashup of funk, punk and metal and it works so, so well. Severely underrated record and all the musicians on it are top notch. And Rob jumps styles back and forth on that record like a champ.

In October 1979, Daisley met Ozzy Osbourne at a venue called the Music Machine in Camden Town, and Osbourne soon suggested they form a band with former Quiet Riot guitarist Randy Rhoads, whom Osbourne had recently met in Los Angeles. The trio hired drummer Lee Kerslake and settled on the band name The Blizzard of Ozz, though a record company billed the act simply as "Ozzy Osbourne".[1]

Daisley contributed bass and backing vocals as well as songwriting and co-production on the group's first album, Blizzard of Ozz, and co-wrote much of the material on the follow-up album Diary of a Madman but both he and drummer Lee Kerslake were fired before the album was released. Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge appeared in their place in the artwork and credits of that album. Daisley and Kerslake successfully sued Jet Records and Don Arden in 1986 for performance royalties and to have their performance credits added to Diary of a Madman. Litigation with regards to these albums continued in 1998 when Daisley and Kerslake sued the Osbournes (who unknown to Daisley and Kerslake had purchased the early albums' publishing rights) for unpaid performance royalties and accreditation. However, the Osbourne management responded to this by deleting the original recordings and re-issuing new CD versions with the bass and drum tracks re-recorded by Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin in 2002. In 2003, Daisley and Kerslake's lawsuit was dismissed by the United States District Court in Los Angeles. This dismissal was upheld by the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.[2]

Daisley continued to write and record for Osbourne throughout the 1980s, playing on and/or writing for Bark at the Moon (1983), The Ultimate Sin (1986), and No Rest for the Wicked (1988). He maintained his working relationship with the Osbournes up until 1991's No More Tears album, which featured his bass playing on all tracks. Mike Inez (who later joined Alice in Chains) appeared in the album's promotional videos.
