Re: Never listened to Holdsworth before....
The man is talented no doubt, but boy does he have crappy taste in guitars. IMHO, one of Carvin's ugliest models, and that's saying something!

Take a listen to his solo in "Devil Take The Hindmost". That's an epic solo!

seconded. i find most of his stuff a hard listen (& so i don't), but this one translates well to normal people. also like 'things you see' & 'letters of marque'
he describes his approach as taking a scale and 'jumbling up the notes'. he does that very quickly.

It's like a nice, chunky variation on a tele. I like the version with the headstock. Probably the only Carvin headstock I don't mind
I agree with you lol
The Holdsworth Fatboy is one of the Carvins I've always wanted to try

O man, check out "Metal Fatigue" & "Road Games". Also check him out Tony Williams Lifetime's "Believe It"(one of my all-time favorite albums) & "Million Dollar Legs", both are KILLER!!!
I should also mention he's on Jean Luc Ponty's "Individual Choice" & "Enigmatic Ocean". Other good ones are Bill Bruford's "One of a Kind", "Feels Good To Me" & "The Bruford Tapes"(he's not credited due to contractual obligations).
Holdsworth is an incredible player that I've seen perform several times and if you get the chance don't pass it up, he turned 70 recently. These records are and have been huge influences for me.
Shit, almost forgot to mention the UK album UK, w/Bruford, John Wetton & Eddie Jobson.

Very talented genius of a man -- wish I had a fraction of his musical knowledge -- but his playing / music is neither enjoyable or interesting to me.

Re: Never listened to Holdsworth before....
Cool.. Holdsworth is a trippy very player, went outside the box early on.
Players back in the 80s were checking him out & talking about his influence, although I think it wasnt always the easiest thing to apply. Seems obvious that Vai got into it. Very liquid, slippery, & legato with some wild note choices. After the shred died down, I quit hearing about him much. But I did see him at a NAMM once.
