I have both a JCA20H and a JCA2212, and I love them both! I am overloaded with information from this page--I'm amazed at all the different mods you guys have done! I thought I would ask your collective opinion about reducing/revoicing the gain on the 20H's OD channel. I love the tone of the crunch of the first channel--is there a way to make the OD channel sound closer in tone to the 1st while keeping a slightly higher gain? Hopefully that makes sense...and happy to hear any responses, thanks!
HI this is exactly what I would like to have in my jca100. I love the sound of the crunch channel with gain maxed and I would like to have the same in the OD but with more distorion. I think the only way do to that is to duplicate the first channel on the second (mod on the coupling circuits + adjusting cathode and anodes resistors) + adding a switch to reshape (or completely bypass) the 3rd stage in the OD channel any advices/ideas ?
I've only done a handful of easier mods to my 22h (depth, slope resistor, a few other resistors and a switch for brightness on the c6 cap, blah blah blah) and it sounds pretty good in my opinion. What I am thinking is why not just add more gain to the crunch channel. That way instead of having the gain maxed you could back it off and get the same sound, then crank it higher for added gain...Is that even possible? Would adding more gain alter the tone structure and change the way the crunch channel sounds all together? Am I nuts? Am I getting high before I head out to work? I only know the answer to one of those questions...Seriously. Is it possible to give the crunch channel more gain rather than trying to alter the structure of the OD channel to more closely resemble the crunch channel? Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?

anything with Vintage 30s would be great. The Carvin Legacy cabs are awesome and can be found for cheap. Crate also has a Blue Voodoo cab that came with V30s. Or if you can find a Marshall 1960AV within your budget that would be cool too.
IMHO, JCA/Soldano amps sound best with V30s. That is also the opinion of Mike Soldano himself when I talked to him about Celestions. Or Warren Haynes, who uses his SLO with a V30 cab and has probably the best Soldano tone out there.

Yeah, the V30 is great - unless you can find Creambacks. I like them even better, either model depending on what vibe you're going for. The H is the perfect choice for heavier styles.
Incoming NAD. Got another Martin Kidd prototype headed my way (allegedly worked on by him, but not confirmed). Doug unloaded some prototypes he had in preparation for his move to Philly, and I was able to get the Custom 22 proto for about $150.
Super excited about this one. I've had my eye on the 2 channel 20 watters for a while now, and since the Custom 22 came out I've been even more curious. I already have a choke, Output Transformer, and Depth control mod ready to swap out from my Friedman just to see what it does for the 22. As soon as it comes in (Maybe Wednesday) I'll post up pics and hopefully clips.

Sounds like JCA is relocating to Philly. Not sure if it would make sense to keep it in Seattle, but that's certainly the impression I'm getting. He's been selling off a lot of in house inventory so he can minimize what he takes with him. Unloaded 2x12s for $130, a few proto amps, etc.

I will definitely be grabbing one of the unloaded 1x12's.
Reached out to Doug about doing some Dunky's vids as well. Fingers crossed. Would be cool to do some more amp demos.
I didn't see it in the 1st couple of pages or the last couple either but I was wondering if anyone has the tube order for the JCA20 Combo? Right now it has a set of JJ Power tubes & Ruby preamp tubes & an ET-65. Thanks!
This is the schematic for the combo. You should be able to see the tubes on the chassis, and if you open up the back plate of the chassis, you can read the names off the board. If I recall correctly (but check to verify) V1 is all the way to the right when reaching up through the back, then V2 and V3 are right next to each other. V4 is phase inverter and I think is by itself. V7 is part of the reverb circuit and is near the jacks for the speaker. V5 and V6 are the power tubes and are grouped together.
You can't see V1 in this pic because it is cut off at the top but it should give you a sense.

Thanks for the info. I guessed right when installing the tubes. I wasn't exactly sure which was the reverb. I didn't have a Ruby for it but had a Penta so it's the only 1 different.
@mbranford - I just created a new thread in the DIY section for the 2112 (same as with the other JCA amps) for those schematics, and created a link on page 1 of this thread for it. Here's the link: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=32429
Ok dudes, I got my prototype 'Valve 20' in today. Pretty much a pre-production Custom 22 board, but I did spot about 3 very small changes (current production looks like it has just a couple more capacitors and resistors than mine does, and the 'bright switch' on mine is located to the pot and not the molex connector on the board).
Through my JCA 2x12 with V30s, it sounds pretty good. A lot like my 50H, but a bit more of a 'British' flavor to it. Not much, but a shift in mid frequencies.
I'm trying so hard to NOT mod it with my standard depth control, choke, and Bulldog OT upgrades because this thing sounds great stock. But who am I to own a bone stock amp?

^ Yea. The slope resistor mod on my 22h made a big difference. I can't recall what I finally settled on for a value but it sounds righteous.
