I think it had to do with the wattage of p.a. systems. A lot of times they'd have to use two amps to get the vocals loud enough to keep up with band volume. I also believe it might have something to do with stereo vocals. Check out Black Sabbath live in Paris 1970. Ozzy has two mics taped
together

Interesting, I bet you're right Stratsouldier. Yeah man, in tons of Dead footage from the 70s, both Bobby and Jerry have 2 mics.

Honestly one of the few Free songs I dislike is their biggest hit, "All Right Now." I won't even listen to it. I just skip to the next (and better) track.
