Does anyone else not care about Black Sabbath at all?

Post by Dave »

I hate Ozzy's voice. I don't find Iommi's playing inspiring. Aside from that one early album their music pretty much blows. Dio fucking sucked.

It's like sludgy opera shit later in their catalog.

Ozzy still fucking sucks.

I don't get the obsession at all.

I enjoyed Sabbath as a discovery, pre Dio era. I still like some of their tunes. But the whole retro, let's pretend we're Sabbath in the sixties bullshit that's been sweeping through the heavy music crowd drives me utterly bonkers. Why sound like fuzzed out shit when you have the option to sound good now? They did what they did because it was an experiment that worked in that time. Fuck trying to sound like that now.

So I can't say I don't care at all, but I'm definitely not as enthusiastic as some people seem to believe you have to be to be TWOO METALZ.

Don't fuck with my favorite band, kid. :D

Great sound, great songs, great playing (bass and drums are outstanding, and Iommi has a fantastic blues/jazz lead style). Every time I hear that music, I'm back in the prime of my life.

I can see hatin on people trying to cop the sound by rehashing the riffs. But fuzzed out shit? Nah, man.. IM tired of the cookie cutter generic tones of today.. People need to open their minds to what is THEIR tone.. Too many people are trying to achieve the same tone.. Especially in metal.. at least the bands trying to turn back the clock are not using that boring overproduced sounds of today..

And I think the first 5 Sabbath albums(and Never Say Die, altho I know a lot of Sabbath fans dont like that one, But I love it) are awesome slabs of work..

I dont know how anyone cant love this shit..

It just sounds so pure and raw to me.. Thats what music is about

I don't hate Iommi's playing, but seriously Ozzy's voice kills it for me. At the same time, I wasn't ever a huge Sabbath fan and just never got in to them. The first album is good, but pretty played out. It's never something I just put on Spotify for no reason.

I do love Iommi's tone, and can appreciate the influence on the modern bands that do it better. Plus modern bands don't have dumb assholes like Ozzy fucking Osborn.

Different strokes, man. I love Ozzy's voice up into the 80s. And he wasn't always the babbling lunatic he seems to be now.

...and yeah - some of their music is overplayed and I don't need to hear it very often anymore. But give me damn near anything off Sabotage or the less familiar songs from the first album or Master of Reality anytime, and its like a drug for me.

Come on. How can you hate on ozzy with lyrics like in Fairies Wear boots? I think this was actually one of the few lyrics he wrote(Geezer wrote most if Im not mistaken), and its just perfect Ozzy.. I love the last lines.
"So I went to the Dr. to see what he can give me
He said Son Son youve gone to farrr..
Cause smokin and trippin is all that you do..
YYYEEEAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

Lol.. I dont know, that shit cracks me up each time. Its like it was going somewhere, then he just decides Fuck it.. YEEAHHHHH!!!. Plus the groove is just so relaxed and true..

I'm not a fan of people trying to sound the same as ANYBODY else, new or old. I agree I wish more people would focus on finding their own tone.

I don't listen to the actual lyrics :D

The timbre of his voice is like nails on a chalk board. That was during his prime. Now it's just sad. Probably doesn't help that the first time I saw Ozzy he was an old joke wearing a track suit with Zakk playing every note with a pinch harmonic.

They are a lot more diverse than what people give them credit for. In a former life; there was a person around me who was a complete idiot who blabbered on and on about how awesome Ozzy was. To say it put me off of him, in particular; is a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE understatement.

His vocal tone still makes me cringe but I do appreciate Sabbath; though I don't actively listen. I would much rather listen to Maiden or Priest if I am in a classic metal mood. As far as Dio goes; I love his contributions to heavy metal but I can't say I actually like his music. It hasn't aged very well for me.

I'm with NFA on the whole stoner rock thing. Yawn. I'll take COC but that is literally about it.

I prefer Ozzy/Randy stuff.

I think Randy's high stress playing was a better match for Ozzy's voice. Plus, Randy's riffing fucking slay's Iommi.

But I do love me some Sabbath.

And FWIW "We sold our Soul for Rock 'N' Roll" is one of the best compilation albums of all time. And is a great Black Sabbath album for the guy who doesnt really "like" Sabbath. In fact, Id almost argue its one of my favorite Sabbath "albums" just because it is ALL good and includes a lot of deeper jams that I loved the most anyway..
