No mountains here... but our wooded singletrack parks make really great use of ravines for rollercoastery stuff. Super fun.

Nice ride today, loop. Damn. I got out on the new roadie today, but the spacers on the cranks through the bottom bracket aren't right. There's some slip longitudinally and creaking. I'll need to go back to the shop for a 4th crack at it.

The back 50 was all swooping rollercoaster hills. Super fun. Got close to 40mph a few times. Such a great day yesterday.

Unfortunately, fast has come and gone. The bike was in thursday, I picked it up saturday, drove 5 minutes away, cycled back,

So, yeah, I get a ride back to my car, go home and come back the next day because they said it was done. I get it and I go for a ride down the block and there is some chain rub in the bottom 3 gears. I go back. I get it tuned. I leave again, then I realize that the spacer still isn't large enough and I don't know enough about pressfit bearings and I've got no other way home since I got my wife to drop me off. I just ride home and try to do some research to see if I can do it myself. I still don't know for sure, but I believe that the spacer still needs to be larger, then gets backed by the retaining ring and the crankset is tightened up to that.
I'm not pleased. The cranks still shift in the bb about 1-2mm. That's the difference between a nice shift and putting your chain onto the crank, which I did...
It's supposed to actually be pretty nice this week, so I have a choice of riding it and going easy for the week or taking it back in today.

Stay on your outside ring and just shift on your cassette. Adds hair to chest!

I'm half joking, lol. We sometimes make it our challenge on MTB and road rides to stay on the outside crank the whole ride. It's a good way to up your wattage pretty quickly. That said, yesterday's ride had that challenge, and I failed.

Honestly thinking of converting my MTB to 1x11 crankset though.

Wow SFM, that sucks! I'm really surprised the shop did that shoddy of a setup on it. I mean, no, its not a 10k S-Works, but its still a really nice ride, you'd think they'd have wanted to make sure its properly set up. (And hell, it shouldn't matter if its a $300 entry level bike, it should be set up properly from the shop!)

I could just stay in the big ring, but if it shifts too much, then it rubs really badly in the bottom 5 gears. Calgary is a little hilly too, so those are kind of important.
I'd say more falls on the factory than the shop. It came assembled, so they really should have only had to put the bars and wheels on and tune it up. Missing/incorrect parts is a head-scratcher, really.
Yeah, it's not a cheap bike at all. I just want to ride...

SFM, that new bike looks awesome, and its in my favorite color combo! Bummer that they haven't been able to fine tune it to your liking, but hopefully they get it there soon.
Been traveling for the last two weeks, so I am excite to get back on the bike tomorrow. Stationary bikes in hotel gyms do not cut it, lol...

Thanks dudes. Oddly enough, my other bike turned up for sale locally and the police notified me that they can't do anything to recover individual stolen items due to lack of resources. Kinda fucked.
I tried setting up the trainer tonight and it won't work with my rear skewer. Time to get one of those. Forecasted sloe for Sunday.

Yeah, I really don't get it. I spoke with insurance and they say I need cooperation from the police to help me identify it. So I guess it's a circle of, "You might as well forget this thing ever happened and enjoy your new bike."

Since the insurance company completed your claim don't they technically own the stolen bike?

Yup. They said they'd need me and the police to help positively identify it. I understand that it would just go to auction after the recovery, but I'm ok with that because I just want to make sure some scumbag doesn't own it. I know it won't lead to an arrest or anything, unless this person actually knows something, which I doubt they do or they wouldn't be buying stolen property for profit.

MTB group ride tonight.
Also made trip plans to do a 26mi MTB ride at Brown County for my birthday weekend on 11/14. We are doing the epic (well, the epic route...the actual epic is Oct 10
) then riding the Louisville Megacave the next day. Wife ok'd it for my birthday. Woot!
It'll be a cold, and awesome ride.

Went out for a lunch ride with the boss up to UCSD and back, a 15 mile loop. Finally! Felt like I hadn't ridden in months even if it was just a couple weeks. Had a gnarly headwind and a long incline to deal with, but once I knocked the dust off, it was smooth sailing. At one point I came down a hill and looked like I was heading straight for the ocean, it nearly took my breath away. I've done that same road in a car, but something about being on a bike just makes it that much cooler, lol.
I am looking forward to cold rides, Loop - sounds like a fun one you have planned! Nice job on that century last weekend, btw!!!

Went for a quick 10 mile sprint at lunch today up to the Mormon temple and back. Trying to start October off right and get plenty of miles in; should be able to blast through my 50 mile/week goal that I set in my first month of riding. I may even do a trip up to Orange County this fall, which would definitely be the longest ride I've done. New goal is to get on the bike every other day, if not more often. Looks like I am taking the wife shopping for her bike this weekend, which should equate to more rides - woohoo!
Any tips from you experienced guys for faster recovery / getting rid of lactic acid buildup? I'm feeling beat today and planning to commute tomorrow...

The best thing to do for recovery is two-fold for me: Rolling immediately after and doing a moderate ride the day after or even body-weight squats a few hours later.
Don't forget the nutrition and rest.
I picked my bike up after work and went for a ride at dusk once I got home. It's a bloody fast bike. The top end is ridiculous. I'm not sure what the cassette spacing is, but it's really smooth. I think that the 11 speed variants are faster shifting by virtue of the tighter spacing, thinner sprockets, along with the newer tech. The yaw of the front deraileur is impressively fast too, but my other basis for comparison had a pretty worn out big chainring. I'm really happy with it and it fits me so well off the rack. I only needed seatpost adjustment. I'm glad they got the bottom bracket figured out. It was apparently working itself out and that's what was creaking. I'm not sure if that was what was shifting the cranks and throwing off the deraileur tuning.
It was a nice 13 km sprint. I broke a few PRs on Strava, even though I haven't been on a bike more than probably 5 times in a month. There are some fast motherfuckers that are about 20% faster than me yet. Maybe I need to join more group rides or stop being such a pussy.

Yes. Getting the wife a bike will have you on the bike more for sure.

Regarding leg recovery...at this stage in the game, you're still an early rider, and not doing huge distances or anything yet, so a lot of it really just riding more frequently. Also, don't take off at your mid-max effort. When I ride 50 miles, for example, I consider the first 10 miles the warming up period. Beyond that, HYDRATION. Take a drink every 15 minutes on the bike. Hydration electrolyte supplements help too. No Gatorade. Skratch Labs and Nuun both make additives that are loaded up with electrolytes and sodium, and some are also caffeinated. I like the Nuun Caffeinated myself. And yes, these do help offset lactic cramping better than just water.
Also, stretch after your ride.
Lastly, like SFM said, keep your legs moving the next day. A recovery ride at an easier pace than your GoHard pace will help tremendously.
Me and some buddies have been trying to get to :45 sec on a hillclimb lately at our MTB park. I'm at :47 right now and PISSED about it.
