:hmm: I don't know my genres very well.
Currently have
Hellacopters
Murder City Devils
Band of Gypsys
the First Maiden album
Dead Boys

Loaded in my 5 CD changer (yep it's from '93)
Shit I guess I'm old.

Thankfully, you have given this thread relevance.

The term "post Rock" implies that it doesn't or will ever Rock.

So, using simple arithmetic....

Post+Rock=Fail.

Rock+Roll=Win.

Definitely, just different sub categories under sub categories. :freak: i hate music categories.

Post metal can definitely "rock", far more than a lot of the cheese factor that is incorporated into most rock. I've heard plenty of post metal that is far more metal than many metal bands out there.

Now you are talking - ZZ Top

I have ZZ Top's First Album, Rio Grande Mud, and Tres Hombres on a loop constantly. All men should have these three records as a soundtrack going in their heads every day.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure about 99% of this music is just not for me. I can appreciate about 25 seconds of each of the posted tunes before my interest checks out.

Like I said, it's the pigeonholing yourself into this style (e.g. each song has to be 12 minutes but can only have like 2 sections, every song must have a lengthy buildup, there must be a tremolo picked delay section) that makes it boring. :cop: But it does have some extremely cool elements I love, and when you mix those with more driven and/or adventurous songwriting, it's the coolest thing ever.

Yes, some of those songs are actually guilty of the tropes I just mentioned, but fuck it, they're way better than most traditional post rock.

I think the first track in Mark's post above was pretty decent. I can see the appeal.

But in a very large general sense I stick by description of the genre being that of lazy uninspired sex that I would never want to have.

I tend to see it more along the lines of people knowing they're no good at actual sex, at all, so rather than spend their time having it they'll do really lame foreplay for as long as they can stand it (the building bullshit), get to the real deal when they can't take it anymore (the groove section), then to apologize to each other for how lame they both were they keep doing stuff to each other afterwards for as long as their tolerance holds out (the fade bullshit).

Granted, some of them never do get around to the actual sex and skip orgasm altogether.

I can agree with that for the many unimaginative, generic post rock bands. But if you claim that about stuff like sleepmakeswaves and Oceansize then I'm gonna slap yo mama. :cop: I know it's not for everybody but there's some super creative musicianship and songwriting going on with them and there's nothing lazy about it. But as for all the Explosions In The Sky and This Will Destroy You clones, I agree with you.

But then again, the mixture and creativity is precisely why I don't consider bands like I posted to be straight up "post rock", so maybe I shouldn't even bother jumping to anyone's defense. In fact, those bands have songs that are even less related to post rock but I specifically picked those because they have a lot of those elements.

Yeah, I was aiming more for those.

To be completely fair though, most of the music I like sounds like horned out teens that just figured out how to keep control while having sex and don't want to stop ever. And fuck it, you can cum and keep right on going because stamina and enthusiasm count more than remembering you have to wake up early tomorrow to face a big meeting.

So the meandering shit bores me pretty quickly.

Your posts weren't bad Mark. They were the ones i enjoyed most out of what dudes posted. I guess I'm just old inside and these "post" genres just don't make much sense to me. It sounds like taking the moods of Pink Floyd intros and interludes and adding modern effects and going practically nowhere with the music.

The elements of swelling up, ostinatos layering over each other and whatnot seems like it would be worthwhile to experiment with and apply in certain contexts. But obviously, most of us seem to agree that formatting your entire sound around that gimmick (cause lets get real, that's what it is) is fucking whack.

Word. Those are 2 of my favorite bands ever and they're much more diverse than that, but those songs in particular have some fairly "post" elements. But they don't really play the genre game, and thus they don't confine themselves...and that's a big part of why I love them. I think you should write whatever the fuck you want...and if some parts come out sounding a bit post-rock related, then that's awesome. But it's very clear that a lot of bands in this circle are deliberately trying to be "post" on purpose and they end up being boring as fuck because of it.
