yes, but sans eyeliner

the trick to it is the songwriting. i like listening to the atmospheric stuff engouh, but i like a destination.

thats why i like the mars volta so much. they will go on a 3 minute instrumental break in the middle of the song, and just when you're like "ok, wtf" it will bring back the chaotic, but planned, maelstrom that embodies so much of what i love about rock/alternative music, but with an intelligence to match the fury. and some fucking samba beats behind it or something, singing about demon goats deciding whether you will be castrated tonight at the offering or some shit in spanish.

guys have i told you i liked the mars volta?

Actually I really love a lot of elements of post rock/post metal, but with a lot of bands (even some of the big ones in the genre like EITS), the songwriting is just lazy. It gets very predictable and often doesn't go anywhere. My favorite kind of music is elements of post rock mixed with more driven, structured songwriting. Like sleepmakeswaves. :cop:

I think this is where I sit with the whole post phenomenon. Something like Russian Circles even, where seemingly everybody goes gaga over them. Sure, the first ten minutes of them you ever hear you're like, "holy wow, how did I miss this before now?" Ten minutes later you're like, "OK, I get it. Can we move on?" Ten minutes after that I'm like, "FIND IT MOTHERFUCKER! FIND THE GROOVE! FIND IT!"

I think I like all these scattered genres popping up though. Because all of them have a little something to offer even a fairly traditional song writer, like myself, if you're willing to pull the good elements out of the mud. I think I tried really hard to dig post metal just because the ideas behind it intrigue the hell out of me, and seem like they should be great ideas. But I have yet to hear anybody do anything with them that has any sort of staying power for me. Give me a traditional thrash album and if it's good I can listen to it ten times in a row and still love it. Give me even the best of the best of post-metal and I can't face pushing the play button for a second time in a two week period.

I can totally relate to a lot of that and agree... i dislike the majority of post rock and post metal bands out there.... but then again i dislike most bands of every genre out there.

I agree with finding a groove and not JUST making it about the atmosphere, builds and "weirdness". I disagree that Russian Circles doesn't do that though. The groove that this finds itself in is killer IMO:

But i think my favorite part about them is the textures involved in their music combined with everything else. They're more unique in that aspect. Also, the fact that they're a 3 piece band is fucking killer.

and since no one is playing the game.... the answer is Tool - Lateralus. It's crazy! Obviously Rush is a huge influence on Tool but the riff is almost identical!! Just something that was shown to me last night that I thought was pretty interesting.

no i didnt hear the drum jam, or guess the riff, because i get no audio at work and thusly am pretty bad about listening to stuff i see on here and want to listen to later, despite marking it even on occasion :(
but i will, and i agree that already sort of describing here and there what we like about certain things that we would work well together. one of the reasons my band sounds like it does is that we dont, and we come to what i think are sometimes awesome compromises but theres a lot of frustration in the writing process. its like we all speak different languages and occasionally stumble upon a word that means the same thing in all of them and its like "ding!". im interesting in what working with someone like-minded could come up with.

3:07 is the first sign of groove in anything other than the drums. And yes, it's a killer groove, but in a six plus minute song three minutes of spacey before the groove is a bit much for my tastes. I get bored waiting for the awesome, and then only get a couple minutes of it out of like twenty minutes of music. Stuff like that is why I dread playing it again even though I remember there are parts of it that I really liked the first time through.

Yeah i can see that. I guess i like the journey to that point and it makes it that much better when it does come and the fact that it's not just repeated over and over and only plays for a short time (short in terms of a long song). Different strokes...

When I think post metal I think more along the lines of Neurosis or Isis (one of the greatest bands of all time) then I do Russian Circles
