Great Hardcore

Post by TurboPablo »

Not the idiot Skinhead crap that morphed into the homoerotic '90s Bro-down/Breakdown shit.

I'm talking about the good stuff. The bands that actually evolved and progressed into something special.

Like Verbal Assault.

Not only one of the greatest Hardcore albums of all time. It's also straight up one of the best albums of the 1980s'. Nobody sounds like VA. Plenty have tried. This album was the soundtrack of my High School life.

I saw them a million times back in the day. This video is a perfect representation of how fucking great their shows were. They were so tight and powerful that it never failed to whip us up into a very dangerous frenzy. Chris would always get pissed at all the stage diving and bitch us out from the stage. But, obviously, no one listened. This was right before the rest of the country adopted the Boston Scenes' propensity for straight up violence in the pit. At one time, the proper Circle Slam was what went down. Everyone would flow in the same direction while still beating the crap out of each other. Wasn't long after this that every pit turned into a fistfight.

Doug, the drummer was big into reggae. You can hear the influence he was having over things at this point. This was all right when the Ska thing was getting big. He lives across the street from me and is a good friend. Still makes most of his living playing music.

I used to try and time my stage dive for the breakdown in the middle of this song. Flare for the dramatic and all.

If this show is where I think it is, then there is a zit faced 15 year old Pablo taking out a whole lot of puberty on people in the pit.

Thread deserves more response. Dig this stuff a lot (a bit more so into the 90s hardcore tho), but my knowledge is totally entry level at best

DBS rules so hard:

Never listened to VA before. Punk was a weird fit for me. Compared to my other tastes; it was sloppy, noisy and generally a 180 from my normal fare. That being said, I love the Ramones and (more in the hardcore vein) Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedys. I also hated the f**k out of the Sex Pistols for whatever reason.
This one is later and more than a little metallic. Which is probably why I dig it :rawk:

Edited for, as I listen, remembering how diverse DK was. Very ahead of their time imo.

This is a later album of theirs and is more on the rock side of things; but I have always enjoyed it:

I forgot about those guys. These guys might be a little too humorous for you but they are pretty damn fast  Actually really solid musicianship for the time as well

Verbal Assault sounds kind of like a more progressive version of Minor Threat or a heavier version of Fugazi. Not a bad thing because I love both of those bands and anything Ian MacKaye does. I can definately hear an Ian influence in the vocals there. I'm digging VA :rawk:
Stringy Things:
2003 Fender American Standard Stratocaster (SD PG/Dimarzio VVB pickups)
2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard 60's (SD PG humbuckers)
2021 Gibson Les Paul Classic (Dimarzio SD/36th Anni humbuckers)
2018 Gibson Les Paul Classic (Fralin P-90 pickups)
2017 Balaguer GAB Scumden (SD PG humbuckers)
2020 Fender American Professional II Telecaster (SD Broadcaster/Vintage tele pickups)
2011 Fender Blacktop Telecaster (GFS Surf 90 pickups)
2021 Jackson JS32 Dinky (SD JB/Jazz humbuckers)
2019 Fender Active Deluxe Precision Bass Special (stock pickups)

Loud Makers:
Jet City 100H LTD head amp
Jet City 50H head amp
Jet City USA Custom JCA48C 4x12 (V30s)
Jet City JCA5012C 1x12 combo amp (stock speaker)

Stompy Things:
Lots o' pedals
Line 6 Helix LT

Ian Mackaye produced their second album, Learn. They recorded it in DC. It's straight up '80s Sammy and The Steak Cutters Hardcore. Almost nothing like what I posted above.

It's on Youtube.

Too humourous for me? Never! Lol.. What's better than music that makes ya move AND laugh!? I honestly look for those bands. I need to incorporate it more into my own music, tbh.. Although Werhmacht aren't quite that band for me. But i do remember this album cover more than the music !

And kinda on topic. I always thought Slayer's punk/hardcore cover album "Undisputed Attitude" was pretty damn good.. Can't find any YouTube links, but i still throw that on from time to time. As much as any other Slayer album at this poimt..

back in high school, this was what all us skaters were listening to (that was a loooong time ago)

You can't forget early Bad Brains

I listened to a lot of the 90's hardcore bands, some kind of morphed into the brocore thing, or at least became the theme songs to bros. I lost interest in the music for a while and decided see what some of the newer hardcore bands sound like. These guys aren't too bad.

Bad Brains transcend all labels.

Simply one of the greatest bands ever.

I Against I is a perfect record in the same way That Purple Rain is perfect.

You can't add or take anything away from it. There are no suggestions to be made. Just sit back and listen to the perfection.

gorilla Biscuits, yep.

Angry Samoans are epic.

If you like crossover, check out The Straw Dogs-We Are Not Amused. One of the first and greatest crossover albums ever. The were originally The FUs.

Your brain will fucking pop.

Actually, I think Gemini off that album is one of the best post-Seasons Slayer tunes. They did the punk thing well. They had the speed and the chaos and Tom's vox did the hardcore yelling thing really good

one of my favorite modern hardcore/punk bands is United Nations. Surprisingly enough it's fronted by the old front man of Thursday. Don't let that deter you if you're not a fan because this guy knows his stuff. The rest of the band are revolving members of other bands like Glassjaw, Pianos Become The Teeth, etc and they all where masks except for Geoff because they are under contract with labels and shouldn't be playing in another band. Dying to see these guys live.

I still do. Forever one of my favorite bands just because the age i was growing up with Glassjaw and Deftones. Those two bands will always be near and dear to me for a ton of reasons not just related to their music.

In fact, just saw Glassjaw play a couple months ago at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin. I even like their new stuff even though it's completely different from where they started.

By the time the '90s really hit, I had moved on to Super Rock bands like the Fleshtones and Titanics. Hardcore, for me, existed in the '80s.

That's why i posted United Nations. To me, they're a throwback to that age at it's core but modern overtones.
