I put a tube screamer in front of every amp that I play. If you're playing metal and not using a boost your doing it wrong.

So, you dig the British sound, then?

yeah, i guess so. i definitely like the gain more, and even my clean tastes have migrated from bloomy to jangly. i do love a good twin and a strat though.

Lately, I have been running my 5150 and DSL 100 in stereo...
I keep the gain on the 5150 at about 3 to 3.5 and hit it with the
MXR Custom Bad Ass OD level all the way up and gain at about 9 o'clock.
The DSL is on red channel and boosted with the Bad Monkey and I have
the gain on it on about 7...
This set, makes for a HUGE sound and the stereo spread is amazing!

Re: OK, time again for: where do you get your gain?
I've done it all...preamp gain straight in with an SG, Little to know preamp gain just cranking a single channel amp til it's going to melt with a big ol' hollowbody. Clean amp with lots of different dirt pedals.
Right now I'm rocking the clean amp with different dirt pedals. I'm probably going to stick with that for a while but who knows I could easily end up back with a cranked Orange and a Gretsch hollowbody. We'll see.

Re: OK, time again for: where do you get your gain?
i like vans style.
and while i do get most of my gain from the TV50's A channel cranked up, i do boost and fuzz, with the M5s addt'l gain options available up front as well, but i never use them. except the sub octave fuzz...she's been creeping in lately...

Right on! I just started experimented with running my single channel amps in stereo, and huge is a good word for it. I'm running the same boosts into both amps, though, since I just use my Choralflange (which is the last pedal on my board in front of the amps) to split the signal. Still, each amp takes the same boost differently, so it does make the sound bigger.

Re: OK, time again for: where do you get your gain?
Man, this thread has turned out great ~ really cool to see how everybody does what you do!
Like I said, right now I'm really digging blending the Plexi's natural od with different flavors of dirt box. The only downside I'm seeing after reading through all these posts is that I've got the Plexi's high volume almost dimed and the normal volume at six (any higher and it gets a bit flubby) ~ I've got a volume pot in the loop to control the overall output level ~ and that means I'm pretty much already getting all the preamp gain out of the Plexi that I'm gonna get.
I wouldn't even have noticed, I don't think, if I had plugged in my remaining Trace Elliot side by side with it & had to dial the Trace's gain down to about 10 o'clock (on the "mid gain" voicing) to match up with the Plexi. As much as I love the Plexi tone, and I do, part of me wonders if maybe I orta have a JCM 800, y'know?
Oh well ~ keep the posts comin', y'all!

I voted "other" because I use all of them depending on what I need...so my real answer would be "all of the above."
Re: OK, time again for: where do you get your gain?
My current setup is the HD500 into a clean SS amp.

Re: OK, time again for: where do you get your gain?
I run the Orange a little dirty, and then use a OCD for most leads, and then a Full Drive 2 to overdrive the signal a little bit to dirty up, and the boost for solos that don't need as much fuzz.
