Pickups for Stoner/Doom?
I have a set of EMG's in my les paul and i know that actives make fuzz pedals react different then passives but i can't decide on what passives... i was thinking vintage output bareknuckles or maybe some 36th anniversary PAF's from dimarzio but i really am just shooting in the dark. I tune to C standard with it and use 12-60 so i want a set of pickups that won't get muddy. Yay for tax return gas

I use a Gibson Iommi and also tune to C standard. No mud.

Bare knuckle Warpigs are THE doom pickup. The SH5 is good, but doesn't touch the Warpigs.

There isn't really a "right" way to do stoner/doom - but in general I feel like you can't go wrong with PAF style pups, maybe slightly overwound but not too hot.

A surprising number of those guys seem to go for AGI/Lace pickups.

Re: Pickups for Stoner/Doom?
I really like the way my Wilde L600 sounds with my fuzz. Out of all the humbucker loaded guitars that I have the Wilde plays the best. It is an alnico III based humbucker with magnetic rods instead of bars. Bill Lawrence/Wilde pickups are amazing clear and sound awesome in lower tunings! I would recommend the 4.8H for the bridge and the 3.6H for the neck.
They are great sounding, and cheap!

Re: Pickups for Stoner/Doom?
I used to run Duncan Invaders for that kinda stuff, but they can tend to get a bit muddy if you don't have your mids set just right.

Re: Pickups for Stoner/Doom?
I've actually been using the neck pickup on my Agile a lot for that style. Its a GFS Dream 90 which is pretty much a hotly wound singlecoil in a HB case. Its about 8.2k pull I think?
I sort of wish they wouldn't say they have P90 tone as they don't really seem to, but they have a GOOD sound to them. Especially when I'm running them into fuzz or stacked ODs.
As has been said before you can find a TON of things that will work great for this sort of sound.

Re: Pickups for Stoner/Doom?
For my stoner/doom stuff I tend to prefer lower output pickups, but lately I've found myself really wanting to mess with higher output options to see what that's about. Like a lot of people have said, there really is no right and wrong way to do it. Just figure out what sounds kick ass to you. It is a fact though that you can't go wrong with Dimarzio Super Distortions though.
