So, the fabled two-amp rig...

Post by draelyc »

I literally cannot imagine any scenario that's ever even remotely likely to happen to me in my life in which rocking a multi-amp rig would be the least bit justified. Nevertheless, as I was fartin' around with the T.E. Bonneville amp I've had up for sale for the past few weeks, I set it up for a mid-gain crunch similar to what I'm getting from the Plexi these days, and I noticed that with the gain about the same, the B'ville's voicing is darker, with more emphasis on the low mids, whereas the Plexi has that growl & the classic Marshall upper mid thing going on. Since these days I'm running my Choralflange last in my chain before the amp's input, I threw an extra cable into the pedal's second (stereo) out and fired up both amps at once.

I had figured if I ran more than one amp at once, it'd be one dirty & one clean, but man, the big, ginormous HUGENESS of the sound. Plexi + Greenies on one side & Bonny + V30 on the other was such a wider, more complete sound. Running delay through the Plexi's loop & using the 'verb on the B'ville made it even huger. And each amp responds a bit differently to my two boost pedals, that just enhanced the effect further.

So, yeah, I stumbled on the perfect rig for when I get back out into the local scene, slogging through familiar old classic rock, blooze, and R&B covers to bars full of approx. 15 drunks. :rawk:

Seriously, I will not ever have any reason to rock such a setup for real ... but it sure is fun for making noise around the house. Mayhap I should take the Bonneville off the market for that reason alone...

/obviousness
/wellduh!
/sb (no "c"; it's just a "sb," lol!

Yeah, it's like pulling the guitars off of an album. Once you've tried two amps at once, one just sounds so narrow.

Fine. That was never my intent here, but fine. Sig line and thread in the For Sale forum have both been deleted.

Amp no longer for sale = not a spam thread. Never was, actually.

Gettin all heated in the dual amp thread.

I use dual amps. Actually getting ready to go do that now. New song written so will be arranging that on the white board.

Cool! :)

It occurs to me that I vould perhaps justify using both amps live b/c one should never gig w/o a backup, amirite? :D

O' course, none of the stages we played last year had the real estate for me to bring a rig like this, esp. w/ two other guitarists in the band... :cop:

I like that you do storyboards for your new tunes, Dave!!! :thu:

Storyboards???

Anyway, yeah playing covers there is no freaking way the venues would have been appropriate for what I'm currently using

I'll definitely be using a single amp for a lot of the gigs. Probably after the first time we schlep Mega Rig to a hole in the wall club to play for 5 people.

Oh and yes. Back up amps and what not! Always a reason for it though a simple 'fuck off, I do it because I can' works too. You're the one carrying the shit so fuck the elitist that think they know better.

Sometimes I'll get the Champion 110 and Princeton 112 going at the same time using the Zoom G3X pedal. Stereo chorus sounds interesting.

I use a JCM 800 full stack and a Fender Twin at home, it's completely justified and sounds great at lower volumes with my pedal board.

In fact I'm not sure I would want to lug that whole setup around and I usually would just bring one amp and compromise when I jam with others (because I'm lazy).

EDIT: I didn't see you mentioned running both amps at once at first. Usually I switch between my 800 for dirty and my Twin for cleans, but I have experimented with running them both at the same time and it's pretty cool but messes with my head a bit.

Having the Twin's clean running with the Marshall's dirty really adds clarity to the overall tone.

I briefly had this setup going where I had two nova repeaters - one for always on but subtle stereo delay/modulation, the other for actual obvious delay, going into two ac30s on edge of breakup.

Was the tits, but I looked down at the two identical delays going into two identically set amps then out to the tiny venue we were playing and the incompetent sound guy who was busy screwing it all up. Next ig it was back to one amp.

But I know what I'll take next time I play a stadium...

I love having two amps (per say). Two volume knobs on the 50/50; one for each cab. Really fun.

I just got an image, when you said whiteboard, of you standing in front of a big board, planning out each measure of the tune by drawing little pictures of each step along the way. Probably it was the pain killers I'm on post-surgery. :freak:

Yeah, when I get back out into gigging, I'll almost certainly just be running the 1x12 combo alone. That's assuming that the magic box I ordered a couple days ago will actually make the fx loop usable.

You know, at first I was gonna set one amp clean & the other dirty, and that worked okay, but with my particular amps, they both get better clean sounds by setting them up to crunch & rolling back the guitar's volume. So I just set 'em both up dirty & ran stereo. :nerd:

Now, if I had a Twin lying around to contrast with the Marshall, that'd be a different story... :D
