Honestly, I work around what the amp has to offer. I do buy my amps for it's tone, not forcing it to sound anything else that it shouldn't.

Really? I tend to force my amp into a corner, tie it's leads behind it's back, and spank it until it gives me what I want.

In all seriousness, I have never been a fan of poweramp distortion myself. Maybe I need to hear a good example of it?

Imo, it also has a lot to do with the preamp & how it interacts w/the power section. I wouldn't dig a clean pre into a distorted power, y'know? But if the pre's got a good crunch going & then the power tubes start cooking on top of that? Aw yiss...

Other. I generally run a boost into the front of a medium-gain amp. Lately though, i've kinda messed around with the gain between the amp and the boost pedal more. For example, i normally ran 95% of my gain from my amp and just a slight amount of grit from my Green Rhino. Now that i have the Doomsday Device, i like the gain structure on it much more than the Green Rhino. Because of this, i'm running less gain on my amp and more gain on my Doomsday device.

I just got the Doomsday Device today though, so this could all change. The aggregate gain between the two ( OD pedal and amp channel) generally stays the same regardless of what i am doing though. its just a 'which gain do i like more' situation and i use more from that device than the other.

Tell me about the Doomsday Device. I just got a Green Rhino and love it, but mainly as a boost.

I used to love the sound of the power section breaking up in my Egnater Tweaker... once the venue permitted I would keep it in the clean mode, put the master up between 2 and 3 O'Clock and the gain around 9 O'Clock and rock the fuck out... it's wasn't MASSIVE amounts of gain but it was extremely touch sensitive and since the preamp had some head room it took pedals like a boss.. the only issue was at this volume it was pretty damn loud lol so it wasn't something I could do at most of my gigs... but it was so nice to unleash that little amp when possible

Ive been boosting gain a bit lately with the MXR 10 band I just aquired.

10 band for me is like my bad horsie. I will never get rid of it because it is a vital piece of my rig no matter what guitar/amp combination.

I like it. Still getting used to it & trying to find that one perfect setting. WAY better than the old Ibanez GE10 7 band I was using, and the SUPER noisy Boss GE7 I had previous to that. I'm using it to raep a Marshalls front end currently, but mainly got it to use with the Laney I have coming (in the loop)

I use the gain from my Mesa Road king and also use a SHO clone I built ran into an OCD clone I built. I use the OCD clone as boost or sometimes use it as the gain on a clean channel (really a nice sounding medium gain pedal on it's own). Needless to say, I can get a nice big variety of gain with a couple steps of foot switches.

Clean boost my dual rec with an 808 so nothing special there. My Father builds custom point to point amps and he put together a 100 watt plexi w/ Merc transformers. The amp is very clean, very bright, and very loud being that these is no master volume. I've kind been thinking lately that I'd like to try his amp with one of the new Bogner pedals....either the Red/Blue Ecstacy or the Uber. Bet that would slay!

Nothing wrong with using a clean amp and pedals to get your gain...look at David Gilmour, his tone is excellent and he's known for doing just that.

I get my Gain from the laundry detergent aisle. I plug a dirty sound into it and it comes out clean!!!

I like a dirty high gain amp with a boost in front just to tighten up the bass. For leads I like a 3/4 open wah, no boost, and a little delay.

I've used boost pedals a whole lot in the past. I kind of look at them as a sort of "quick fix". Sometimes they are just what the setup needs. But when you find a guitar/pickup/amp/speaker combination that can nail it without the boost, it just has a little something extra to me that doing it with a boost can't reproduce.

So with my current setup,...I'm straight in.

Any good recording of an overdriven ac30, ac/dc Marshall crunch, those are the first that come to mind. It really depends on the amp and application. High gain amps generally start to get flubby when the power section breaks up. And alone the lack of clarity can be frustrating, but a bit of extra crunch from having the whole amp cooking can sound great when the band is behind you.

When i was running my 2203 I would use the 70/30 rule... 70 percent amp gain and about 30 percent pedal.. works great with a JCM 800. Now that I have my Wizard I'm able to match that gain in the overdrive channel and still have clean on the other, I no longer need a pedal... so its amp gain for me.. for the most part. My pickups are lower output paf's, I dont like to distort the preamp with my pickups.

Srsly, I love the sounds of these pedals. I guess that's what's changed my approach to amplification, huh?
