whos your favorite shredder?

Post by jnurp »

Im not asking who you think is the "best" shred player, but who do you enjoy the most?

I really loved Blues Saraceno growing up and of course the first two Yngwie albums blew me away.

if I had to choose I would say Blues, he was just so unique in his phrasing and composition.

perpetual Burn was a favorite of mine too, so maybe Jason is #2 for me right after Blues.

I don't think it's completely fair to calll Blues a 'shredder'; dude has so much more going on than that.....but yeah he can definitely fucking rip if he wants. One of my favorite guitarists, period. He has the most unique vibrato out there IMO

But if Blues counts as a shredder, then Richie Kotzen should too. He's definitely my favorite player, evar.

Otherwise, Jason Becker, Greg Howe, James Murphy and Dave Davidson are all favorites of mine

I'm also a huge Satch n Vai fan

I'm on a huge Vai kick right now, been listening to a lot of Vinnie Moore lately as well. All time favorite would be Chris Oliva though. I can listen to him anytime on not get burned out on it.

I'm really not into shredder style stuff (Suicmez gets a bit of a pass but I can still only handle so much before its time for something else)

That said, Paul Gilbert. Dude just makes it sound fun. I love his shredding style.

If he counts, Al Di Meola. Return to Forever's stuff is full of sweet playing and of course his solo career was nothing but guitar.

Tough call for me. It would be between:
• Yngwie
• Paul Gilbert
• Andy LaRocque
• Yngwie
• Marty Friedman

Funny story about Blues Saraceno. My mom lived in CT when I was in High School. There's a store there, Brian Guitars (or used to be anyway) and Brian Cohen was Blues manager. When Blues released "Never Look Back" he was doing a clinic for Tascam demoing the Porta-5 recorder. Brian had me come and meet Blues and hang out for a bit. I also got the tape Blues recorded on that night. Wish I still had it. They goofed on me a little when I would go there and say, "Hey. Blues 2 is here."

I was like 15 at the time.

That was also Brian's daughter on the Never Look Back cover.

Marty Friedman.

He has great vibrato, his phrasing is really unique, I like his use of exotic scales, but most importantly, his solos are super catchy.
