posting this here for my gf

Post by GuitarBilly »

hey guys... this is something I am doing to help my gf's dog, who is very sick at the moment with Anemia. Just the last few days we spent over 3 grand in treatment for her but she needs another blood transfusion, more ultrasounds and meds... we have until Friday to come up with another $2k+ to cover all this shit. Please help spread the word about this and try to help if you can.

Thanks

Good luck, I don't have much at the moment but I put a small donation down.
I hope it goes well, that's a lovely dog.

Ugh that sucks Billy... mojo and a little something sent to help. I actually just diagnosed a dog with IMHA this week and I know just how serious this can be. Hopefully she makes a full recovery and feel free to ask if you need someone to talk vet-related stuff with

Thanks man I did not know you're a vet.
She's very weak right now and the vet asked us to keep her in a cage or small area because she is running out of oxygen when she moves around too much. I was walking her this morning and she just collapsed :( so now we put up a little playpen and she's staying there. I don't think she knows how sick she is and she keeps wanting to play with the other dogs but we can't let her. She's usually the hyper corgi type so this is hard.

yeah Mimi is 10 so she's not exactly young either but she still has a few years ahead of her. Sorry to hear about your wife's dog man :( we all know dogs have a short lifespan, but it's really hard to have to say goodbye, they are like part of the family.

Not quite a vet yet, currently doing clinical rotations for my final year of school so we usually get treated like a full vet.

I'm sure the vet explained the condition to you, but if anyone else is reading this, essentially the dog's immune system suddenly decided to attack it's red blood cells and they're being destroyed. That's why she's running out of oxygen, she just doesn't have enough red blood cells to transport oxygen. If they did a transfusion it sounds like it was pretty critical and they needed to stabilize her. Unfortunately her body will still keep destroying the blood cells so this is a temporary measure to hold her over until they can figure out the root cause.

Sometimes, the cause is just a random attack of unknown origin (idiopathic). Other possibilities are bacteria that infects the red blood cells themselves (commonly a tick-borne disease) or some kind of tumor. The reason why they need to do bloodwork and ultrasound/x-rays is to rule out those chances. If they don't find anything, it is likely idiopathic and they can treat it with steroids and maybe an immunosuppressor once she is stable.

Dogs are incredibly resilient, they are great at being stoic and wanting to please their family even when they feel like crap. Do your best and give her lots of love, but I definitely understand how hard it is to keep them calm when they want to be having fun.

Sorry to hear about this Neil. sounds like the dog is in heart failure and unfortunately there isn't really anything that can fix it :( there are medications that can treat the complications that arise (the choking (coughing?) is likely fluid building up in the lungs) but there isn't much you can do to treat the root cause. 15 is a very good age for a larger dog, make it as comfortable as possible and enjoy as much time with it as possible

yes sir, your explanation is exactly what the doctor told us. We got her blood taken out today for the tick borne test and will have to do the ultrasounds tomorrow to rule out cancer.

Good luck with the school man, it's an awesome profession you chose. Much respect.

Wish I could, had a guinea pig problem 2 nights ago and he had to goto ICU and stay overnight 2 nights.

$800 for a $25 pet. But he's our little guy and if I got the money, I'll drop it on him. He goes in for surgery in a couple weeks to fix his nose/breathing. That absess removal will be 1K for sure.

 pets make us soft.

Thanks man. She's hanging in there for now but very weak. We need to start the next batch of treatments soon but it's way too expensive so I don't know what's going to happen. I am already starting to accept the situation for what it is, but my gf is having a really hard time with it. So let's see. I appreciate the mojo and good wishes though! :)

Started a rotation in internal medicine today, my first case? A dog diagnosed with IMHA last year. She was presenting to the hospital for something else, but her IMHA has been treated with steroids since being stabilized and she was happy as can be and her red cell count was completely normal. Just wanted to give you some hope that long term treatment can be successful once you get her stable. Glad to hear she's still hanging in there!

Thanks man. Mimi seems stable for the last few days, but she is still panting heavily. She has her appetite and she's very alert, which is a good sign. She will have another blood test on Thursday and that's when we will find out if she is making real progress or if the blood she got from the transfusion is coagulating again. So yeah I am having hope that she will pull through this :)

No Problem man!!! I moved some funds around so i could help you guys out! it's not much but i figure every penny counts right? and in my eye's it the least i could since you've taking the time and money out to get the forum going and keep it running so smooth :) I know what it's like to have to deal with super expensive bills from the vet... my parents dog gets quite sickly a lot... it's not out of the ordinary to rack up 500-1000 bucks every time.. and i see the emotional toll it takes on my parents and its never been life threatening problems, so i can't imagine how they'd handle something life threatening.. Good luck man, prayers and mojo!!
