All in good humor.

In all seriousness, I wouldn't play in a band with someone who wore a bowling shirt or a team jersey or any of that crap. You also don't go get shitfaced aNd get on stage and drop the f-bomb or any other general douche-bagging ploys. Yes, you show up on time, be professional about everything from showing appreciation to the bar owner and crowd, etc... Still, I find ironic humor when rules are applied to rock and roll which has traditionally been about having no rules. Also, some of these people's rules are fucking dumb.

I was a douche that day for sure

Were they athletic shorts? Cause, that would be awesome.

Haha, no. Cargo khaki shorts. Probably the first time I worse shorts at a show in 5-10 years

I was in the grocery store earlier and I saw a dude wearing short, Tobias Funke type jorts, knee high socks and Birkenstocks. He is my new fashion icon and the man all bands should aspire to dress like. Seriously, that guy don't give a fuck.

Dave, I didn't mean to be a douche earlier. Just some humor.

I guess my own rules are that you need not exceed certain thresholds. For instance, don't show up wih what you wear Saturday mornings around the house. No fucking makeup.

Are you an awesome player? You can get away with more. Our bass plays wears camo shorts, black graphic tees and white sneakers. I looks great on him and it helps he can rip a bass into pieces. We used to soundcheck to "Jerry was a race car driver."

Absolutely. And it works the other way around too. If you want to set any "band rules" you better be a badass or not a single fuck will be given..

I have no patience with guys that are barely scratching average and want to dictate band or stage rules. Lead singers are particularly guilty of this kind of shit.

You should hear my singer...

Him: guys, we need to have a similar look. We need to dress well. We should do "X, Y, Z"

Me: dude, you wear baggy jeans ripped at the bottom and 5 year old $10 Asics that have holes in them

He also asked me where I black pants. He didn't know where to buy black pants...

He's welding.
He's riding a motorcycle or ATV.
He's driving a convertible.
or.... he's fixin' to suck somebody's dick.

No home- made / cheesey looking merch, banners, etc.

Dont be a ham.

Dont call out a mistake.

No rants / speeches.

Dot get hammered before hand.

Dont talk to the crowd like a titty bar DJ.

Dont attempt to play "works in progress" / shit that isnt 100% ironed down.

Look for cues from others.

Dont try to throw in drum fills your not sure of.

NEVER let a bass player or drummer run sound.

Dont touch my shit.

Dont bring anything you're not gonna use.

Dont wear your own band's shirt.

No solo "singer with an accoustic" coffe shop song bullshit.

Have fun.

Dont talk like you're bigger than you are. "This is our hit song off our last album"

My rules anyway. Not playing with anyone at the moment. Some day maybe I'll find some folks to do something with.

dont know how i missed these earlier, but spot fucking on, all of them

and to paul, et al: heres what needs to be understood about this thread
1. until now, these rules are unspoken. its not like (again, until now) we right them down and live by them. its just shit we see other people do that make them look unprofessional, amateurish, etc.
2. any band that looks like they dont give a crap about any of this that you see? they have probably thought at least once about it and dressed/acted accordingly. at the very least, if they havent, its just natural and if one of the band members walked out in one of these rock and roll wardrobe faux pas, they would immediately notice. that is if they arent in korn or metallica.
3. its tongue in cheek, mostly. yall do what you do. whether i cringe and snicker with my friends at the shows or not is between me. you would probably point out 100 really dumb looking-to-you things that i would pull live. chime in! just dont say that there are no rules, and that anyone who makes them are uptight twats. just being honest.

the titty bar dj voice  instantly let me know how pandering and soulless of a cover band you are.

This. Curious how many dudes upset over this thread were in a band where all 5 of you mongoloids looked completely different and lacked any kind of cohesiveness. Maybe hits a little too close to home?

No one is saying you gotta wear a suit or wear "nice clothes." Just look the part. How lame would it be to see Behemoth and instead of all their metal garb they were wearing khaki cargo shorts and white tennis shoes on stage? Totally fucking lame. You're on a stage. Its a show, not your garage practice where you and your buddies trade licks over Mustang Sally.

That reminds me of the time a singer in a band I used to be in briefly mentioned we should wear all back or something at practice before a show. He seemed genuinely hurt and upset when several people showed up in blue jeans. Like he wasn't mad just really disappointed in us and sad. lol

The people in this thread saying "fuck rules, wear what you want, rules are stupid," remind me of the people in ugly amp threads who say, "I don't care what an amp looks like as long as it sounds good," while playing Fenders, Marshalls, or Mesas.
"If there was only a way that I couldn't even any less than I already can't then I'd gladly not, but I think I've entered some quantum paradox, dark matter levels of can't evening where the total absolute value of not evenness exceeds all ability to explain the can'ting." - MR RUBATO

I'm still amazed that people think musicians make sense. We're not rational people. We are superstitious, weird, particular and judgmental.

Like Shea said, if you want to look like an every day schlub then stay in the garage.

But seriously, it's rare I meet someone worth playing with that dresses out of Kmart circa 1995. It's like the community just looks the part without having to say all of this crap. Noobs that don't are usually just noobs that play in their basement. They don't get it, and they can't play worth a damn. No loss

These aren't really "rules", its just common sense. If you're in a band playing gigs then you dress the part. The "part" can be black jeans and a tshirt...just don't look like a schlub.

If you're 55 and playing crappy 70's covers at the local dive for the 20 people who drink there every night...wear whatever you want. Be my guest. But if you're a band getting decent gigs I can assure you that at some point you will consider what to wear.

Imagine if you went to a football game and the players did not wear the monkey suit ..... it would be a very confusing. Everyone in jeans with tourist shirts. Same thing at McDonalds ....
Most people are way more image oriented ..... the actual music is much farther down the list of how you are perceived.
The fact that Stephen appears from nowhere, is sentenced to death in an emotional public trial without anyone interfering at all and is then altogether forgotten as if nothing happened, is already suspicious.
