well duh. the most used attack on passwords is a dictionary attack. misspellings and character replacement makes your password safer.

It's pretty simple to translate the dictionary to h@xx0r. It's not like they're stuck using the Merriam-Webster english dictionary :lol: I wouldn't put much confidence in you spelling your password "P@55w0rd" instead of "password" saving you from a determined hacker. :ugeek:

My password here is the same as the one I was given when I first signed up to the HC forums in 2001. Never changed in once over there, figured I'd keep using the same one here too. :lol:

it's simple, but they will exhaust the proper spellings before they start going for character replacement. it's not like some dude is sitting there typing every password under the sun. they would use a program or a macro or something. changing characters jsut makes a brute force attack take longer.

Yes, but if they're anything above a dumb script kiddie they'll put the character substitution(s) into their macro that can try 4-20 thousand passwords a minute.


Usually if you try one of these (and maybe different letter cases) you'll get it within 10 tries though :lol:
