Guitar and Golf. Why those two?

Of course I've been playing guitar for years now and have spent quite a bit of dough on all the gear I have to this point. Just got a second hand set of golf clubs a few months ago and am fighting the urges everyday to go to the driving range/play the front 9 at least. Why do I pick the most expensive hobbies? Why not model airplanes or something?

Any one else feel my pain?

i'm getting back into sailing again. not a cheap hobby either. right now am eyeing a tiny sailboat to use on the ice. they can haul ass. hopefully will get back into racing too, that was blast.

Sailing looks like a lot of work. I'd rather motor yacht around.

I feel you on the expensive side of hobbies. When I get the time I'll go out and fiddle around in an airplane to the tune of $400/hr.

I could probably save money by going in a smaller slower plane but wtf.

I have a friend who's into aviation, and from what he's told me, fully taking ownership of, and getting attached to, a plane is unwise financially. Most hobby plane engines are good for about 2000 hours, he says. Buy one with 1000 hours on it, you can get them cheap (relatively), sell them back off after another 300-500 hours to take the smallest depriciation hit. Of course, I'm into owning crap, so that doesn't sound great to me, guess I won't plan on flying.

Airplanes have huge fixed costs that only come down when the hours it flies go up. 1 guy flying = 1 guy paying those fixed costs.


15 guys flying = 15 guys splitting the fixed.

All truth. Engines are good for 1600 hours- most make it past the time between overhauls. Some don't.

The most basic of engines, the lycoming IO-360 a 4 cylinder aircooled engine is about $28,000 new. It's crazy.

Airplanes are best used as tools for business or otherwise. My friend blows about $3,000 an hour on his little jet. Fuckin crazy, and here I am looking at a twin engine airplane for purchase in late 2013.

Don't fly, don't learn to fly. It's a heartbreaking experience when you can't afford to do it.

Try photography; makes guitars look positively cheap. Once you graduate from cheap kit lenses you can spend thousands on a single lens...and if you get serious you need light gear.

Or high end audio; "affordable" speakers are less than $5K a pair.

Beyond guitar, road cycling (not cheap), audiophile, beginning photography, lightweight backpacking, used to be a golf addict. Backpacking is about the cheapest of them, a good down bag that costs $300-400 is about the most expensive piece of gear you need, but you probably need at least 2-3 rated for different temperatures.

I hear ya. I basically do music right now. Used to dabble in cars. I do build my own computers and stuff, but once done...I am able to convince myself that I am set for a few years. A lot of all of this is deciding and sticking to when enough is enough. Someone will always be faster, stronger, better looking. Same goes for hobbies. Let' the Jonses be the Jonses and you play your own game.

As for flying...I am glad I am too big to fit in a pilot's seat. I would love to fly and have it in my blood.

Part of why I'm glad I got into exercise.
Other than food (and protein) and the occasional piece of equipment (probably under $200 total) its a pretty cheap hobby.

I already play guitar, chase girls, and like to travel.
Those three things eat enough cash as is.
