Scary movies, that are actually scary?

Post by CrunchBerries »

Googled it. And there are some seriously shitty picks out there. I have watched a dozen movies suggested on top lists and although some were ok, most of them were terribly shitty. Yes, good script, good cast, etc... but zero balls in the scary department. I have a number of scary movies over time, but not a huge amount.. so I just picked ones I thought I hadn't seen yet.

I know there are movies out there that still exist, as I remember a few years ago watching a movie and feeling that nightmarish discomfort you get when you actually watch something that draws you in.

I have watched some movies with decent "pop horror" - like silence, then suspense rise, then BOO! Spooky face! Arghh! Then nothing else is scary. Or then there is the all out gory head-slasher, or the "matter of fact" ghosts that just have stupid friendly conversations with the living, pretty much the "Casper" effect.

Any ideas? I have read that "The exorcist" is pretty good, but then again i have read that about all the movies I have watched up to now.

The Strangers. Horrifying if you have a family; makes you think about what you'd have to do.

I thought The Descent was pretty scary, but mostly for the claustrophobia related stuff rather than the monsters.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre [1974] is the yard stick for scary movies -- for me anyways -- and also, A Nightmare on Elm Street still creeps the shit outta me and has since I was really young.

Yeah good choice.

The only movie to ever scare me was jaws, no kidding.
The omen was pretty frightening too.

yeah, i'm desensitized unfortunately, so i can't really help you. None of them are scary to me, but some are awesome.

I though The Decent was great for the reasons mentioned above.

I don't even see The Exorcist as a horror movie anymore. Though it has great horror elements for sure. That is not a bad thing, but the story isn't necessarily about Reagan being possessed. That is a huge part of the story, but the book/movie is about Damian losing his faith. The movie is a masterpiece from beginning to end. Just don't bother with the Directors Cut. It ruins the flow of the movie and just adds pointless and redundant stuff. Probably my favorite movie of all time. I could watch it forever.

Alien is a great horror story. Another masterpiece. Then follow up with Aliens because it's just as good, but a completely different genre (sci-fi).

Even Horizon is a great flick for sure. Not so sure about it being scary, but it definitely has a freaky factor.

There are a ton of foreign movies that are great too and usually very unique. Korea has been pumping out great ones like "Thirst" and "The Host" (which is a little campy, but fun and awesome). There is a good one called "Frontiers", which is french. I can't think of them all right now. And of course, "Let the Right One In" which is another genius movie.

I tend to stay away from most American horror these days because Americans just can't write a simple horror movie and if they try, it's usually very bad. Most American horror these days either very badly plays off "the Exorcist" or they start off OK and end up in some ridiculous bullshit plot when they have to explain what is going on (Insidious for instance). Horror doesn't need resolution. It doesn't need to make sense. Fuck.. now i'm pissed about it again. :)

I used to be a Muscle car nut. We'd scour country back roads, all over West Ky, Southern Illinois, West Tn, Southeast Missouri looking for cars / parts.

I cant think of how many old farm houses we ended up at that made me think "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" when we'd pull in the driveway. Old run down places with waist high grass & various states of neglect. Sometimes it would just be old folks who lived there, but alot of times really creepy hick / inbred types. Those were he one's that'd make you think of horror films.

We found a '70 Chevelle at a place like that one day. When the guy was walking us around out back to let us look at it, my broe quietly said "Hey...ddo yyyou like..head cheese?? mmmy bbrother makes it..rreaal god". I tried HARD not to laugh.
