Looking for LP pickups / recommendations...

Post by Tortuga »

Started putting new pots / wiring in my LP and decided I wanted to start trying out some different pickups. Looking for something new to pair up with the new 2204 - mainly wanting classic/hard rock/early metal tones (70s & early 80s).

Very interested in trying out some of the Gibson pickups, but open to any suggestions y'all might have.

The LP came with a set of Dimarzio 56th Anniversary (that I need to try again, but I do remember liking them). I've also tried a Super Distortion and the HB-sized P90s that are in it now.

Hit me up if you've got any you might want to sell.

I have a few BG mason buckers around that I could let go of.

For Gibson stuff, I love the 500t.

I’m not selling mine but am super impressed with a pair of early 80’s Ibanez Super 70s. They are very open and clear sounding with a nice high end, where as many humbuckers I’ve tried don’t have much high end/treble.

You can't go wrong with anything.

Brandonwound makes good stuff.
Dimarzio Super Distortion would be cool.

I'd just put the 36ths back in the there. They sounded great in that guitar as far as PAFs go.

For something hotter I like the Duncan Custom and 59.

For Gibson 498T and 490R are cool. I had them in before I switched to the 36ths

My son latched onto the 36th Anniversary bridge pickup, and I don’t have the heart to take it away from him :(

I do have the neck pickup, and am going to try it in the bridge position (because why not), but figured it was time I tried some other things out.

Keep the 36th in the neck. PAF Pro in the bridge. That pickup rules.

The 36th neck is a bit too clean in the bridge position IMHO
The 36th really works as a set. But even then, it would be just one pickup to buy.

Super Distortion should work well too.

JB doesn't sound good in that particular LP. I'd go with the Custom or Custom 5 for Duncans.

It's a LP that's going to be played through Marshalls, stick with the usual suspects.

I have a Gibson 70s tribute bridge. Think Evh meets the JB. But it’s tight. It’s right there in between the 2. Aggressive tight but has that old school snarl. For lack of a better description, it’s what I hear in good Gibson pickups. That grit and snarl

And a BBPro bridge, but I used that in the neck. It makes a great neck pickup. So 70s bridge, BBPro bridge in the neck, all Gibson and I guarentee that combo smokes.

You have so many options at your disposal. I am a huge fan of the Rio Grande Genuine Texas/Buffalobucker. It has plenty of push if you want in the bridge, and great versatility in the neck. Such a great set. The BBQ/Texas set is cool too, but it can be too much depending on the setup.

I would just slap the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary neck pickup back in the LP and throw a Super Distortion in the bridge. This is the set I have in my black LP Classic and they sound great with JCM 800/JMP style amps. The SD does a great job of pushing those for more gain, but still have that classic sound. They sound awesome through my Jet City 100LTD.

Put the 36 back in the neck and do some swapping in the bridge. I seee no reason to chase neck pickups in a LP. Throw a good PAF in there, forgetaboutit and focus on the bridge pup.

Thanks again for all the info, gents!

I think I'm going to baseline things for me with the 36th neck pickup (in the neck position, as some of you have advised) and try out my son's Sheptone TB in the bridge for now. I like the idea of trying different pickups in the bridge position, so will stick with that plan. Might have to get the other 36th pickup out of my son's Worship Strat and may even try the Super Distortion that's in another guitar I let him steal from me. That'll hopefully get me some insight as to what I like/not like and then go from there.

I have a few Sheptones. I love what he does. But I hate the price hike he did a couple of years ago. He went from my go to shop to a no go zone. I will only buy his stuff used now.

If you are patient and persistent, order a Motor City Black Belt 2. I ordered a BB1 and love it.
