I'm having trouble picking out an amp. I play mostly metal, so I'm looking for a small high gain tube amp. I'd like it to use all tube distortion.

These are the ones I'm looking at:
Randall RD5H
Hayden Lil' Mofo
Jet City PicoValve

Which one? Or I'll take any other suggestions, any help is greatly appreciated.

why do you want a low wattage high gain amp? honest question.

and why do you want 'all tube distortion'?

reason i ask is because if you need a lot of gain, and not so much volume-- solid state amps are fantastic at that combination, and there's a bunch of great ones for JUST that purpose-- e.g. the peavey bandit.

I'm not familiar with the first two - but take the pico valve off your list - I have heard nothing but bad things about those.

They blew them out at $99 earlier, and people are still asking $150 - $200 for them on the used market.

Used Tiny Terror would be pretty sweet.

7w Triode mode sounds great. If you wanna get louder, switch to Pentode 15w...it's tighter without any sag.

Add a boost if it's not enough gain.

^^^ I had one and it was great for high gain tones at reasonable volume. It had very tame volume even compared to other 5w tube amps. You could dime the clean channel for some old school power tube distortion and still be able to sing over it unmiked.

After you watch Gene/CougarHunter's demo of the picovalve you really won't bother with anything else. Please, keep in mind Gene is pretty much a pro level guitarist.

Baron snott watt hands down especially if you play metal. There's a white on on eBay with no bids at $400. That beats waiting 6 months for one. They're killer little amps with enough low end and gain. They even sound more killer boosted with a maxon 808.

Practice and possible recording reasons.
I'm using EMGs and they don't like to be stacked on-top of solid state stuff.
I prefer tube amps, because I think SS sounds cheap and artificial.

only reason i ask is 'cause there's a LOT of compromises in quite a few of the little tube amps-- although that little baron sounds mighty good.

before you jump- have a peek at a peavey bandit. probably seems nuts-- but it really could save you some serious hassle down the road, and might be more what you're looking for than a little tube amp. they definitely don't sound cheap and artificial!

The RD5 will do metal extremely well. The Jim Root Terror was also an amp I would have liked to try, but the price point did not meet my budget.

From all of the amps mentioned so far on this page, I would say the Randall RD5H and the Hayden mini mofo. Between those two, I'd find a way to do a head-to-head.

I'm going with the Randall. The Lil' Mofo covers a lot of tones, but I think the Randall's right for me.
