This is kind of a historical question so I thought it would suit well in this forum. Hope I am right.

So I am trying to figure out which were the most important electric guitar players but I need mostly those that helped promote the electric guitar when it was still young and unknown among the musicians.

I read here http://www.musicalien.net/guitar-history/ that the electric guitar was popularised by BB King, Elvis and Charlie Christian. Since I am finding it interesting to learn about this. Could you expand it for me?

Out of your knowledge, who were the most important and the most influential early electric guitar players? Also if you know about some which were not as famous it would mean a lot because finding about such artists would be tough without knowing their names at least.

Thank you in advance!

Muddy Waters was the first Bluesman to go electric.

Bill Haley invented Rock A Billy

Hendrix.... no explanation needed

Giving credit where it's due to the forefathers, but Hendrix is the high point for me. It was when the top exploded off and the cat never went back in.

Charlie Christian, Willie Dixon, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix. I could make a list of about 100 dudes, but these would be the top 5 per your criteria, imho.

First off I decided to take out anything post 1980. Second, I hear a Tool influence in your music, whether you hear it or not. Josh Homme, Hetfield and Slayer were probably Adam Jones' biggest influences.

I made a joke, cause I'm hugely influenced by Tool but being a Tool fanboi is almost as bad as being a Nickleback fan these days in terms of group identity stereotypes.

The most important electric guitar players are the ones who were most influential. I would probably say... In chronological order:

Robert Johnson
Charlie Christian
Django Reinhardt
Jimmy Rodgers
BB King
Chuck Berry
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
