MIDI DRUMS MADE SIMPLE:

Hey all, since there were a few of you guys here and quite a few on some other forums I frequent, that were asking for some clips on how I manipulate/create my drums using MIDI, I thought it was high time to finally "get to it" and make some tutorial vids.

The first vid was to get me more familiar with my new screen recording software so it is a pretty simple one that shows how to extract MIDI files from a GuitarPro or like tab and then get the drums into your DAW and prepped for editing. Trying to keep these "quick hits". This vid is certainly not groundbreaking but it is a good primer for jumping into the whole midi drum world.

Up next will be 3 more vids:
• Manipulating free/retail midi loops to work for your track
• Creating beats from scratch
• Sending EZDrummer/Steven Slate Drum Kits to individual tracks in your DAW (Snare, Kick, Toms, etc)

For the "Creating your own" I will take popular song/s and recreate specific beats.

Anyway, hope someone finds these helpful and I will post the rest as they are completed. Also, a HUGE shout-out to Ryan Bruce (aka Fluff) for hipping me to ScreenFlow for my on-screen vid capture. It was a nightmare trying to get these vids done using Quicktime.

EDIT:
I will make this an "All Encompassing" thread and add the new vids here instead of doing multiple threads.

Vol.1: "Extracting Drums from Guitar Tab files into Your DAW"
phpBB [video]

Vol.2: "Setting Velocities, Humanizing Beats & Hit Replacement"
phpBB [video]

Vol.3: "Creating Your Own Beats from Scratch"
phpBB [video]

Vol.4: "Modifying Existing Midi Loops... And some Motörhead!"
phpBB [video]

Vol.5: "Routing EZDrummer2 & Steven Slate Drums to individual channels"
phpBB [video]

This is going to be AWESOME! I really need to learn how to program drums and beats... I totally suck on real drums and on drum software. Will watch after work.

Glad you guys are excited! LOL! I am finishing up the "Humanize and Velocity" one now.

Question... do you prefer I keep ONE thread and add to it?

EDIT:
Also, second vid is exporting and then will upload in the next hour or so. This is a BIG'N but covers the Humanizing, Setting Velocities and replacing drum hits

I just watched the first one on my phone. I'd prefer to do it on the desktop so I can have EZD2 and Reaper open while I watch.

Yeah I really dig it. I'll make some vids with it as well. I am going to show how to route the software for individual tracks for Slate, EZD and Superior

I'm also going to do a shootout of Logic's native plug-in's vs. 3rd party

Next is recreating beats from existing songs from scratch and customizing existing midi loops. I am thinking maybe Ace of Spades from Mortorhead!

Volume 5 is uploading now. It shows how to route EZdrummer and Steven Slate drums to individual channels in your DAW for mixing purposes... I will update the OP when it's done.

Got to watch #2. Jer, you are a fantastic instructor and this is EXTREEEEEMLY helpful!!!!!!
I like how you are using before and after tracks to illustrate progress made and how you wrap it up, with a quick review at the end... AWESOME!!!

Dude - I cannot wait to be able to watch this stuff.

Over 2 hours of incredibly insightful lessons on EXACTLY what I've been wanting to do with EZDrummer... You are a saint :rawk:

Thanks dude! Been getting some good feedback on some other forums as well for these. It was suggested to do some other lesson type things so I will probably do some "How To Play..." vids. Going to start getting my soldering skills up to scratch for pickup comparisons like Loop mentioned.

Jer - I still haven't had a chance to listen to all the vids yet, but I think I'm on #4. Truly excellent, and much appreciated

Even recommended the vids to our bass player, so he can help both of us get out of the drumtard state :D

Question - when adding EZ Drummer stuff to Reaper, I get pop-ups asking about multiple channels - not sure what that's for, and I wind up with MANY tracks being added to my project (seemingly) regardless of which option I choose. Any tips on that? Do you have to have all the tracks in the DAW? Is there an easy way to collapse them?

Thanks!

Really got a lot out of #4!!! :rawk:
I'm glad you chose Ace of Spades because, being familiar with the song, made everything click in my head more easily and I was humming and singing along with you!
Very cool, Jer!!! Totally worth the 40+ minutes it took to watch. :thu:

Not Jer but still...when you go to make a drum track are you actually doing a new track and then adding EZD2 as an FX on the track, or are you creating a virtual instrument track and it's giving you multiple outs? Just doing a track and adding EZD2 should only result in one track...

As far as collapsing them, put your cursor in that field where the tracks are, hold Ctrl and roll your mouse...one way makes them bigger, one way collapses them all the way down to one line apiece. You'll see what I mean.

Sorry man but I am no help in Reaper. I assume it is giving you about 13-20 tracks? If sou, Reaper is somehow calculating how many tracks required to send each mic to its ow track. That's cool. You should just be able to say no and get one stereo track. I am not versed in Reaper unfortunately.

Glad you are digging the vids though!

Awesome man! I figured Ace would be a good one to do since it is such a well know song and even non-rock or metal people know it. Glad these are helping and I appreciate you all giving them a go.

The Khed finally makes good! LOL!

Yeah this was my thinking. Make a new instrument track and then add EZD2 as an inserted effect.
