im just tired of the constant barrage of information/texts/emails/facebook/etc... so tired of it that a few days ago i lost my temper and bent my iPhone 6 in half, destroying it.

I just want a phone that will call, text and a few other basic things. looking at the sonim XP5.

http://www.sonimtech.com/index.php/prod ... onimXP5_15

I love having my news and forum fuckoffery on the go. But I stay away from facebook. I also have no problem leaving my phone at home when I go out.

For me it's about limiting/controlling inputs.

I don't know about iPhones, but on Android you can just turn off all notifications - and check everything when you want it.
Seems like a cheaper solution.

I will often FINALLY check my voicemails, and find I have some from weeks earlier.
Never been anything important though - as I watch the numbers as I receive calls, and answer/listen to anything that is important.

I have a terrible attitude, but I never understood destroying the technology. :idk:

I'd keep a smart phone and just turn the data off.

Yeah, we are about to start "going backwards." I'm going to cancel our unlimited data first and see how that goes. Personally I really miss my old Razor.

Yup. The money is just getting ridiculous. Right now I have the cheapest Motorola smart phone and it does more than I will ever need. I need to figure out how to tear my wife and son away from Apple.

Remember when smaller was better? I'm talking cell phones, of course!
Except for GPS Navigation, I wouldn't miss my Android Cell at all. However, when I was in Rome, last May, we used Google Maps, every day, to find our way around.

You know, of all the apps on my phone, I use the phone app the least. Super convenient as a handheld PC, and I have a modicum of self control so that it doesn't take over my life. :idk:

Small phones had shitty reception, shitty quality audio, and were generally worthless. "Can you hear me now" was successful for a reason...

Yeah I have none of that.

I held off for years on the smartphone because I knew I'd be addicted the moment I got one. Now I look at it for hours each day. I disgust myself.

Every organization I'm in, they blast each other with nonstop group texts. I don't get it. Who wants to read that shit? And why on the go? I much prefer email as a way to get group notices, but I think I'm in the minority.

And looking at long chains of texts on the flip phone doesn't work well, so to function in society I'm basically limited to the smart phone.

I'd quit Facebook in a second if I didn't need it for business. The site has become practically worthless.

Part of me would love to get rid of my smartphone. Living in a new city area, and travelling for gigs makes the GPS a must for me. I do turn it off often, and don't pick it up that often. I have most of my notifications off, and keep Facebook signed out (it really does listen to everything you say, as reflected by the ads).

I hate the impact they've had on society. Technology in general is ruining people.

I would only do this if I needed a burner phone fo my hoes. Boost mobile got this deal where you get steep discount when you bundle wife and ho phone package. They calling it The Tiger Bundle. Would go with that probs if was needed.

Totally understandable. It's definitely not good for us.. I "turned off" from the constant connection a few years back. No Facebook, minimal time on this forum. I'd check email once in the morning and that was it. I absolutely felt free from the addictive nature of technology. And in general, just about every addiction is bad for someone.

But after a year in a half I got drawn back in. But I'm due for another break too. Shutting down the Facebook is a good start

Get rid of smartphone? No way. However, I have mine iPhone set up to be much less of an intrusive time wasting device. I want my phone to work FOR me.

Here are a few suggestions for those wanting to 'disconnect' a bit, without deleteing all social media accounts and going to live in the woods:

- Disable all notifications, except for specific things. I allow calls, texts, FB messenger, etc. (stuff from actual people). I allow email notifications, but only my work account is set to Push data. The rest are set Fetch manually.

-For regular apps, I'll allow notifications from the ones that I want to have my attention (Duolingo), and not from the ones I don't (most of them...Yelp, Tetris, etc.). Specific apps can have granular settings you can play with. For example, I want notifications from Twitter when a few specific people tweet, but I have other bullshit turned off like News, Recommendations, Moments, Highlights. You can also disable SOUND notifications for apps and leave only Badge or Banner(off lock screen)...so you'll only see it when you're actually using your phone instead of being driven it by seemingly random but deliberately timed beeps.

-The steps above will keep you from being driven to your phone by AI code trying to distract you from life, but once you're in the phone, habit and visual ques take over. Sequester all 'bullshit' apps away in a folder kept on another screen so you'll never see them unless its on purpose. Leave the main screen only for oft used utilities/productivity apps and other stuff you actually WANT to catch your eye. Maps, Calendar, Phone, Texts, Calculator, Fitbit, MyFitnessPal, etc. Twitter, Instagram, Games, etc. are all in the out-of-sight folder.

- You'll be able to access the apps in the sequestered folder by swiping down, and typing the app name specificaly. Turn off Siri Suggestions (Settings > Siri & Search > Siri Suggestions to off) or else Instagram will just show up there too. Swipe down to a blank screen, type Instagram, and launch. This way you have to already want to go to Instagram before you see the colorful icon specifically designed for you to want to click on it. It takes a bit more effort than just clicking on the button, which helps.

- If the last step doesn't do enough for you, delete the apps completely, and force yourself to manually log-in through the mobile web browser. Don't make a bookmark, and DON'T SAVE CREDENTIALS. This is a much bigger impediment to 'impulse' social media use and is very effective.

- Turn on automatic Night Shift and set to full amber color. Turn on scheduled automatic Do Not Disturb for night time ( https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204321 ) and set the "allow calls" settings to whatever you'd like

Hope this helps! It's quite refreshing to have it set up this way. I recommend it to everyone

I would be favorable to going back to a simpler phone, but I think that the real solution is ditching the majority of my social media activity and use the phone for the typical utilitarian purposes, like online banking on the go, traffic navigation, music listening, etc.....

We have tiny computers in our pockets that are powerful when you consider what you had on top of your desk 10 years ago. It's a little too good to let go.

I have a smart phone, but I use very little of the smart features of it.
I am pretty much out of facebook and social media in general, except for the band page and the GAB group but even that is very sporadic these days. I post on my personal page maybe once every 2 weeks or so. Social media got old for me.
The main features I use on my phone are pictures, music (Google Play), navigation, banking/paypal and texting. I could do these things from a basic phone but honestly, my current phone was free when I signed up with Metro PCS so I don't see a point in not using it. It's a LG android phone, not sure the model but more than enough for my needs. The coolest feature is the fingerprint scanner that allows me to unlock the phone with my fingerprint, so no PIN to type or remember. So I am happy with it, but my use is very basic. At the end of the day, it all comes down to discipline, I guess. I don't need to check my feed all the time etc..

Thanks for the tips. I might use that folder thing.

What are you learning on Duolingo? I was doing Spanish but have been slacking for the last couple of months. I got the trophy and was trying to keep my tree gold.

pretty much this. If my phone weren't also my note pad, calendar and email contacts list I'd gladly ditch it.

I miss the days when there were no cell phones. Pretty much anyone with a real job nowadays is on call 24/7 because of cell phones and that's bullshit.

have had the sonim XP5 for over a month now and love it. it has bluetooth, a web browser, GPS, etc... but using the web browser, for example, while completely doable, is a lot more difficult and so i only use it when i actually need to use it. i have a laptop, an iMac and and older iPhone at home that i can use on my home network if i need to, but again, i only use them when i actually need to use them, not when i am just walking by/chillin' on the couch/lying in bed/etc... when i go hiking or even walking around outside, i notice the small things a lot more, like trees, birds, brown patches of grass where i urinate at night and so forth. this is b/c the constant barrage of information is overstimulating, like eating excess processed/sugary food and just like how when you cut sugar out of your diet you realize just how delicious a baked potato with just a little salt is, the little things around you start to give you joy again.

want to make sure i mention that this is not everybody's case and probably even far from the majority of people's cases; this is my case. smartphones are an awesome invention so if you are good with it, keep on keepin' on but if you find yourself a little over-stressed and need to unwind, try turning your phone off and putting it away for a week. after about 2-3 days, you will notice a big difference.

I got the IPhone 10, but I found myself using it less for social media and more just as a camera / music player / phone. Its an amazing tool but I am not checking it every minute.
I even have the watch but I use that as a remainder device (I have a very bad memory) a fitness tracker and remote for my music on the train.

I guess I pay to much for technology I don't use constantly. :D

try it for 1 week. that's it. you will see what i am talking about when i say you start noticing the little things that give/once gave you joy. you will also really notice how many people are just walking around, staring at their phones like zombies. every person in their car at a red light, people crossing the street, people jogging... you will feel like the only person awake. eddie vedder has a no phone policy at pearl jam/solo concerts b/c no one is taking in the show and giving energy; they are just recording what is happening and not even experiencing what is going in right in front of them. i was also surprised at the amount of free time i got back when not dicking around on my phone, living in the digital world and all of us around here know that analog >>>> digital.

i deactivated for a while until i got rid of my phone. reactivated. i check here and there to keep up with older friends and some family that i'd like to hear from and talk to here and there but who are not in my close circle.

if it works, do it. nothing wrong with that at all. it is awesome when you can use it as a tool to help you but you don't let it consume you.

I hear you. It bothers me when people are video recording the entire show, or snap chatting the entire show. Not so much that I care what they're doing, but having people with phones up blocking the view is grating. Then seeing them caption the videos saying how good of a time they're having. It never really looks like they're having a good time. it looks more like they're trying to prove to other people what a great time they're having. Bizarre.

I go to shows to experience music and block out the outside world. I'm still guilty of futzing on my phone while sitting at red lights, and other stupid occasions where I'm just passing time instead of taking in life. I could definitely stand a lot less screen time looking at dumb shit.

yup. everyone just wants to show others they are having a good time. i don't think it is really wrong for people to want to capture a moment and whatnot, but it isn't for me. i'd rather live in that moment as much as i can and that's not possible if you are looking at a screen.

if you are sort of sick of your phone, try a week phone free. you'll be glad you did.

Wait, I thought this was the whole point of social media, one-upping all your "friends". Am I doing it wrong?
